Dee is in the kitchen and he is very excited! He's making lots of cookies for the cake sale tomorrow. He has a base dough that has vanilla, and is adding in different flavours to make blends. Kind of like consonant blends! We can help Dee by learning about adjacent consonants at the end of a word containing the letter T. You might already know that consonants are letters that aren’t vowels. And that adjacent means two things that are next to each other. You also might know about blends, when you mix things together. But, did you know that you can blend letters together too? When blending two adjacent consonants together, you hear the sounds that each letter makes. Adjacent consonants can be at the beginning, middle or end of words. In this video we will explore adjacent consonant blends with the letter T at the end of words. Let's take a look at Dee's first batch of cookies. He's mixing in fruit with toffee! What happens when we blend the letters F and T together? To work it out we need to start by saying the sound the first letter makes. Here the letter is F which makes the /f/ sound. Then, say the sound the next letter makes. Here the next letter is T which makes the /t/ sound. Finally, say the sounds of the two letters faster until you get the blend! The letters F and T make the blend /ft/. Like in the words soft or sift. Next, Dee is mixing in nuts and toffee together. What do the letters N and T make when blended together? Remember to start by saying the sound of the first letter. What sound does the first letter make? The first letter is N which makes the /n/ sound. Then, say the sound the next letter makes. What sound does the next letter make? The next letter is T and makes the /t/ sound. Finally, say the sounds of the two letters faster until you get the blend! So, N and T make the sound /nt/ when they are blended together! Like in the words tent or ant. Finally, Dee is mixing together chocolate chips and toffee! What do the letters C and T make when they are blended together? Remember to say the first letter and the sound it makes. Then, the second letter, and the sound it makes, and finally blend the two letters together by saying the sounds faster! Do you know what C and T make when blended together? The letters C and T make the blend /ct/. Like in the words fact or insect. While Dee finishes baking, let's review.
