Basics on the topic Tools for Measuring Length

Ways of Measuring Lengths

You probably know how measuring lengths works. You need a unit of measurement and a tool for measurement. But how do you know which tool to use for different objects? In this text, we will examine how to measure the length of an object and how to choose the right tool for measuring.

Tools for Measuring Length

We can use tools for measuring length such as a ruler, yardstick, metre stick, or tape measure to measure the length of objects.

Steps for Measuring Length

Sometimes, different tools will make more sense to use than others because objects differ in length and size.

To determine which tool makes the most sense when measuring, you can follow these simple steps:

Step # What to do
1 Observe the object.
2 Identify which tool to use.
3 Measure the object with the right tool.

Measuring Length – Examples

For example, you might want to measure the length of a sweet! You could use all of the tools to measure a sweet, but a ruler makes the most sense because it is closest in length to a sweet.

If we were to measure a fishing rod, we probably would not use a ruler, yardstick, or metre stick since they would not be long enough. In this case, we would be best off using a tape measure to measure a fishing rod!

Measuring Length – Summary

To identify the best tool for measuring length, remember:

Step # What to do
1 Observe the object.
2 Identify which tool to use.
3 Measure the object with the right tool.

Transcript Tools for Measuring Length

"I don't know Freddie, I'm not sure this ruler is best for measuring this fishing rod!" "But what can we use?" Let's help Zuri and Freddie by learning all about tools for measuring length. When measuring the length of objects, we can use tools such as a ruler, a yardstick, a metre stick and a measuring tape! It is important to use the appropriate tool when measuring to get an accurate measurement. A ruler is often used to measure small objects. They can be used to measure in centimetres and millimetres and also inches. A ruler is usually around thirty centimetres long, or twelve inches. A yardstick can be used to measure medium sized objects and is exactly one yard long or three feet. A metre stick can also be used to measure medium sized objects and is exactly one metre long or one hundred centimetres. Yard sticks and metre sticks are similar in size but not the same length. Finally, a tape measure can measure bigger objects and is a great tool because it can be used to measure all sorts of objects from small to large! They can be used to measure in metres, centimetres, and millimetres and inches and feet. Tape measures can be found in lots of different lengths, but the most common length is twenty-five feet! So, how do you decide which tool is the best to use for different objects? First, you can observe what you want to measure. Ask yourself, "What tool is closest in size to this object I want to measure?" Next, identify the tool you want to use. Finally, measure the object you want to find the length of! For example if you wanted to measure your hand, you could use any of the four tools but it makes most sense to use a ruler because it is closest in size to your hand. Well, unless you're a giant, of course. Now let's help Zuri and Freddie identify the best measuring tool to use! Freddie found an old tricycle. What tool would be best to measure this? A yardstick or a metre stick would make the most sense here! A ruler would be too short and a tape measure does not make sense since the tricycle isn't that big. Here is the next object that Zuri has found, a sweet! What tool would be best to measure this? A ruler would make the most sense here! You could use a yardstick, metre stick, or tape measure, but they don't make the most sense since sweets are usually fairly small. What about the fishing rod? Which tool would be best? A tape measure would be best for this object. A ruler, yard stick, and metre stick would not be long enough to measure this object! While Zuri and Freddie look for more objects to measure, let's review! Today, we learned about choosing the best tools for measuring objects. You can choose between a ruler, a yardstick, a metre stick and a measuring tape! When deciding what tool to use: first, observe what you want to measure. Next, identify the tool you want to use. Finally, measure the object. "Well, the measuring tape makes the most sense, right?" "It does Freddie,” "But how do we measure it!?" "Stop waving at me you wibbly wobbly thing, we're trying to measure you!"

Tools for Measuring Length exercise

Would you like to apply the knowledge you’ve learnt? You can review and practice it with the tasks for the video Tools for Measuring Length.
  • What are the tools of measurement?

    Hints

A metre stick is longer than a yardstick.

A ruler is used to measure shorter objects, like a pencil or a notebook.

The measuring tape is the longest measuring tool above.

    Solution

Here are the measuring tools in order from shortest to longest:

    • Ruler
    • Yardstick
    • Metre stick
    • Measuring tape

  • How to decide what measuring tool to use.

    Hints

There are 3 initial steps when deciding what is the best tool to measure an object.

Zuri is doing one of the steps in each image. Match the steps and the image.

    Solution

The steps for measuring an object are:

    • Observe the object to be measured.
    • Identify the correct measuring tool.
    • Measure the object.
    • Apply measurement for desired purpose.
Zuri applied the steps of measurement on the bath to help her fit it through her bathroom door.

  • What objects can the ruler measure?

    Hints

Picture the objects in your mind. Think if they are the right size to be measured by a ruler.

Objects that are a littler longer than the size of your hand can be measured with a ruler.

    Solution

Objects that can be measured with a ruler from the list above are:

    • a toothbrush
    • a pencil
    • a drinks can

This is because these objects are small enough to be measured by a ruler.

A dog and a washing machine would be too long to measure with a ruler.

  • Are the statements true or false?

    Hints

True means the statement is accurate and correct. False means that the statement is incorrect.

    These are the measuring tools.

Look at this picture of Zuri in a toy car to help decide if a measuring tape can be used.

    Solution

    True:

    • The yardstick is exactly 3 feet.
    • Measuring tapes can measure any objects.
    • A measuring tape can measure a toy car.
    False:

    • Rulers measure large objects.
    • A pen is best measured with a metre stick.
  • Which is the best tool to measure the objects?

    Hints

Remember the steps for measuring an object:

    • Observe
    • Identify
    • Measure

The size of an object helps us to know what measuring tool to use. The longer the object, the longer the measuring tool should be.

Use this image of the different tools to help.

    Solution
    • The desk could be measured with a metre stick or a yardstick.
    • The skipping rope could be measured with a metre stick or a yardstick.
    • The clock would be measured with a ruler.
    • The car would be measured with a measuring tape.
  • Can you complete the instructions?

    Hints

This image shows the different measuring tools from shortest to longest. How can this image help you find the correct words?

A glue stick is pretty short - what measuring tool would be best to use?

    Solution

When measuring objects, there are different measuring tools we can use. The longest measuring tool is a measuring tape that can usually measure up to 25 feet. The shortest measuring tool is a ruler that can measure up to 12 inches or 30 centimetres. The yard stick and the metre stick are similar in size but not the same length.

An example of an object we can measure with a ruler is a glue stick. An example of an object we can measure with a yardstick or a metre stick is a guitar. An example of an object we would use a measuring tape to measure is a fridge.
