Basics on the topic Comparing Fractions - Let's practise

Today we are practising comparing fractions with Razzi! This video contains examples to help you further practise and grow confident in this topic.

Transcript Comparing Fractions - Let's practise

Razzi says get these items ready because today we're going to practise comparing fractions. It's time to begin! Using fraction bars to help, is two-thirds greater than, less than, or equal to one-quarter? Pause the video to work on the problem and press play when you are ready to see the solution! Draw the fraction bar for two-thirds and a same-sized bar for one-quarter. Two-thirds is greater than one-quarter. Did you also say greater than? Let's tackle the next problem! Compare three-sixths and five-eighths. Pause the video to work on the problem and press play when you are ready to see the solution! Draw the fraction bar for three-sixths and a same-sized bar for five-eighths. Three-sixths is less than five-eighths. Did you also say less than? Let's tackle the next problem! Compare one-half and two-quarters. Pause the video to work on the problem and press play when you are ready to see the solution! Draw the fraction bar for one-half and a same-sized bar for two-quarters. One-half is equal to two-quarters. Did you also say equal to? Let's tackle the final problem! Compare six-tenths and six-eighths. Pause the video to work on the problem and press play when you are ready to see the solution! Draw the fraction bar for six-tenths and a same-sized bar for six-eighths. Six-tenths is less than six-eighths. Did you also say less than? Razzi had so much fun practising with you today! See you next time!

Comparing Fractions - Let's practise exercise

Would you like to apply the knowledge you’ve learnt? You can review and practice it with the tasks for the video Comparing Fractions - Let's practise.
  • Is $\frac{1}{2}$ less than, greater than, or equal to $\frac{3}{4}$

    Hints

Look at the fraction bars. Which bar has more shaded parts?

    Solution

    $\frac{1}{2}$ < $\frac{3}{4}$ because $\frac{3}{4}$ is larger than $\frac{1}{2}$

  • Are the given fractions more than $\frac{1}{2}$, less than $\frac{1}{2}$ or equal to $\frac{1}{2}$ ?

    Hints

Draw fraction bars for each of the fractions. Compare the fraction bars to determine which is greater.

The line in the middle represents $\frac{1}{2}$ .

    Solution

    $\frac{1}{5}$ < $\frac{1}{2}$
    $\frac{2}{4}$ = $\frac{1}{2}$
    $\frac{5}{6}$ > $\frac{1}{2}$
    $\frac{8}{8}$ > $\frac{1}{2}$

  • Is $\frac{3}{6}$ less than (<) , more than (>), or equal to (=) $\frac{1}{2}$ ?

    Hints

Draw fraction bars to represent $\frac{3}{6}$ and $\frac{1}{2}$ .

Look at the amount shaded for each fraction bar. Are the fractions < , > or =? Write the symbol in the blank.

    Solution

The fraction $\frac{3}{6}$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ because they both represent half.

  • Which fraction is more than $\frac{2}{6}$ ?

    Hints

Draw a fraction bar to represent $\frac{3}{4}$ and $\frac{1}{4}$

Look at the fraction bars. Which one has more than $\frac{2}{6}$ shaded? Write that fraction in the blanks.

    Solution

You can see that $\frac{3}{4}$ has more shaded than $\frac{2}{6}$ . That means that $\frac{3}{4}$ is more than $\frac{2}{6}$ .

  • Which fraction is more than $\frac{3}{4}$ and less than $\frac{3}{4}$ ?

    Hints

Draw fraction bars to represent each fraction.

Look at the fraction bars. Use these to determine which fraction is more and less.

    Solution

$\frac{7}{8}$ is more than $\frac{3}{4}$ , because a larger portion of the fraction bar is filled for $\frac{7}{8}$ than $\frac{3}{4}$
$\frac{2}{4}$ less than $\frac{3}{4}$ , because a smaller portion of the fraction bar is filled for $\frac{2}{4}$ than $\frac{3}{4}$

  • Write the correct symbol in the blank.

    Hints

Draw fraction bars for each fraction.

Compare the fraction bars. Whichever fraction is more, is greater or > .

To find the < and > symbols, look next to the "m" key on your computer. You will need to press the "shift" key to type these symbols.

    Solution

    $\frac{5}{6}$ > $\frac{1}{2}$ $\frac{2}{3}$ > $\frac{1}{3}$ $\frac{1}{4}$ < $\frac{2}{3}$ $\frac{3}{5}$ < $\frac{5}{6}$
