Basics on the topic Litres and Millilitres (Word Problems) — Let's Practise!

Today we are practising litres and millilitres word problems with Razzi! This video contains examples to help you further practise and grow confident in this topic.

Transcript Litres and Millilitres (Word Problems) — Let's Practise!

Razzi says get these items ready because today we're going to practise litres and millilitres word problems. It's time to begin! Solve this word problem. Divya had five hundred millilitres of juice. She drank two hundred and thirty-five millilitres. How much juice did she have left? Pause the video to work on the problem and press play when you are ready to see the solution! To solve, we need to calculate five hundred minus two hundred and thirty-five, which is two hundred and sixty-five. Add the unit of measurement. Did you also get two hundred and sixty-five millilitres? Let's tackle the next word problem! Six containers each have four litres of liquid in them. How many litres of liquid are there in total? Pause the video to work on the problem and press play when you are ready to see the solution! To solve, we need to calculate six multiplied by four which is twenty-four. Add the unit of measurement. Did you also get twenty-four litres? Let's tackle the final word problem! A bucket has forty-eight litres of water in it. It is used to fill up six water guns equally. How much water does each water gun get? Pause the video to work on the problem and press play when you are ready to see the solution! To solve, we need to calculate forty-eight divided by six which is eight. Add the unit of measurement. Did you also get eight litres? Razzi had so much fun practising with you today! See you next time!

  • How much liquid is in the mocktail?

    Hints

Highlight key information. Look for amounts and what the question is asking you to find.

The question says altogether. This means you need to add to find the total amount.

    Solution

Ben and Toby made a mocktail. They added 250 ml of orange juice and 325 ml of lemonade. Altogether, there is 575 ml of liquid in the mocktail.

    250 ml + 325 ml = 575 ml

  • How much water?

    Hints

For the first problem, you are trying to solve how much water is in 3 buckets. You could add or multiply to find the answer.

To find out how much water they started the water fight with, you are trying to find out how much water is in 7 buckets. Which operation would be the best to use to find the total?

To find out how much water was left at the end of the water fight, you need to subtract how much water was used from the total that they started with:

    • 28 - 16 = ?
Once you know this, you need to divide this by the amount of water than can fit in a bucket.

    Solution

To wash the car, Bill used three full buckets. Altogether, he used 12 l of water.

    • 3 x 4 l = 12 l
Bill and his sister then decided to have a water fight! They filled up 7 buckets of water so they had 28 l, however, they only used 16 l. They still had 12 l left which is equal to 3 full buckets.
    • 7 x 4 l = 28 l
    • 28 l - 16 l = 12 l; 12 $\div$ 4 = 3

  • How much does each person get?

    Hints

Sofia is sharing 420 ml between six. Which operation do we need?

We need to divide 420 by 6.

    Solution

Sofia was pouring drinks. She had 420 ml and wanted to make sure 6 glasses had an equal amount. How much would be in one glass? 70 ml.

    420 ml $\div$ 6 = 70 ml

  • The Washing Machine.

    Hints

Remember, each load uses 12 litres. You will need to multiply or divide by 12 to find the answers.

If you are finding the amount of water used, you will need to multiply the load by 12.

If you are finding the number of loads, you will need to divide the litres by 12.

If one load uses 12 litres, how much would half a load use?

    Solution

Here we can see the completed table.

    • 2 x 12 = 24
    • 4 x 12 = 48
    • 120 $\div$ 12 = 10
    • 12 $\div$ 2 = 6
    • 60 $\div$ 12 = 5
  • How much lemonade is left?

    Hints

The question asks how much lemonade is left. Which operation should we use to find this out?

This is a subtraction problem. We need to subtract the amount Poppy poured from what was originally in the jug.

    Solution

There was 750 ml of lemonade in a jug. Poppy poured 300 ml into a glass. How much lemonade is left in the jug? 450 ml

    750 ml - 300 ml = 450 ml

  • The Party.

    Hints

Read the question carefully and highlight key information. Think about what it is asking you and which operation you need to use.

    • If you are being asked to find how much there is altogether, you would need to add or multiply.
    • If you are being asked how much is left, you would need to subtract.
    • If you are being asked how much each person gets, you need to divide.
    Solution
    • For the party, Ana has got 245 ml of orange juice and 395 ml of blackcurrant juice. Altogether, she has 640 ml of juice. 245 + 395 = 640
    • Ana has also made a dessert. For the dessert she needed 573 ml milk which she took from a full bottle that contained 1 l. Now the bottle has 427 ml milk left. 1 l = 1,000 ml; 1,000 - 573 = 427
    • Ana wants to prepare a glass of lemonade for each of her 7 guests when they arrive. She has 840 ml of lemonade so each guest will get 120 ml in their glass. 840 $\div$ 7 = 120
    • In the party bags, everybody gets a bubble wand. Each bubble wand contains 40 ml of bubble mixture. In 7 party bags, there is 280 ml of bubble mixture altogether. 40 x 7 = 280
