What is 18 divided by 2?

Hints

Try drawing two boxes and sharing the counters out equally between the two groups.

Count how many spots are in each group now.

There should be the same number of spots in each group.

Solution

We start with the dividend, which is 18, and share it between 2 groups. There will be 9 in each group. This is the answer.
What is 32 divided by 4?

Hints

What is the divisor in 32 ÷ 4? This is how many boxes are needed.

If we shared out 32 equally between 4 boxes, how many would be in each box?

Solution

If we want to share thirty-two by four, first we need to set up four boxes.
Then, we share out thirty-two between the boxes.
In each of the four boxes there will be eight.
Which division equation matches the image?
Hints

How many dots are there to begin with? This is the dividend and goes at the start of the equation.
You can find this number by multiplying the length by the width.

How many boxes are the dots being shared between? This is the divisor and goes after the division symbol.

How many dots end up in each box? This is our answer and goes right at the end of the equation.
You can find this number by multiplying the length by the width.

Solution
The correct answer is: 36 ÷ 3 = 12
- This is because there are 36 dots to begin with.
- These are shared between 3 boxes.
- You end up with 12 dots in each box.
Solve the division questions.
Hints

Look at the divisor. In this question: 35 ÷ 7 = 5, the divisor is 7. This is how many groups you need to make.

Next, share out the dividend, the total amount, between all the groups.

Finally, count how many are in each group. This is your answer.

- 12 ÷ 3 = 4. 12 shared between 3 groups means there will be 4 in each group.
- 20 ÷ 5 = 4. 20 shared between 5 groups means there will be 4 in each group.
- 24 ÷ 6 = 4. 24 shared between 6 groups means there will be 4 in each group.
- 30 ÷ 6 = 5. 30 shared between 6 groups means there will be 5 in each group.

Hints

Starting with the dividend, 16, share each of these into the two boxes. You could try drawing this.

How many do you end up with in each box?

Both boxes should end up with the same amount.

Solution

16 ÷ 2 = 8
There will be 8 in each box, since we have 16 and share these between 2.
