Transcript Comparing Quadrilaterals—Let's Practise!

Razzi says get these items ready because today we're going to practise comparing quadrilaterals. It's time to begin! Compare and contrast the properties of these quadrilaterals: a parallelogram and a kite. Pause the video and press play when you are ready to see the solution! Both shapes have four sides with two pairs equal in length. A parallelogram's opposite sides are equal and parallel. Its opposite angles are also equal. A kite's adjacent sides, or sides next to each other, are equal and one pair of its opposite angles are equal. It has no parallel sides. Did you find these properties? Let's tackle the final problem! Compare and contrast the properties of these quadrilaterals: a trapezium and a rectangle. Pause the video and press play when you are ready to see the solution! Both shapes have four sides. A trapezium has one pair of equal sides and one pair of parallel sides. It also has equal adjacent angles. A rectangle's opposite sides are equal it has two pairs of parallel sides and all of its angles are equal. Did you find these properties? Razzi had so much fun practising with you today! See you next time!

Comparing Quadrilaterals—Let's Practise! exercise

Would you like to apply the knowledge you’ve learnt? You can review and practice it with the tasks for the video Comparing Quadrilaterals—Let's Practise!.
  • What are some of the properties of a parallelogram?

    Hints

What do you notice about the the opposite sides?

What do you notice about the opposite angles?

    Solution

Some properties of a parallelogram are:

    • 4 sides
    • 2 pairs of sides equal in length
    • opposite sides are equal
    • opposite angles are equal

  • What do you know about these special quadrilaterals?

    Hints

This is a parallelogram. What do you notice about the opposite sides?

This is a trapezium. What do you notice about one pair of sides?

A rectangle has equal angles. What do you notice about all of the angles?

    Solution

These are some properties of special quadrilaterals.

  • What do these special quadrilaterals have in common?

    Hints

This kite has one pair of opposite angles. What do you notice about the angles?

What do you notice about this pair of sides?

    Solution

Here we can see the correct answers.

  • Compare and contrast a kite and a trapezium.

    Hints

What do you notice about the adjacent sides on this kite?

What do you notice about the adjacent angles on this trapezium?

This kite has one pair of opposite angles that are equal.

    Solution

    A kite has these properties:

    • 4 sides
    • no sides parallel
    • adjacent sides equal
    • one pair of opposite angles equal

    A trapezium has these properties:

    • 4 sides
    • one pair of sides equal
    • one pair of sides parallel
    • adjacent angles equal

  • What are some of the properties of a trapezium?

    Hints

What do you notice about this pair of sides?

What do you notice about the adjacent angles?

    Solution

Some properties of a trapezium are:

    • 4 sides
    • one pair of sides equal in length
    • one pair of parallel sides
    • adjacent angles equal

  • Comparing quadrilaterals.

    Hints

The two pairs of sides are parallel on this rectangle.

What do you notice about the opposite sides on this rectangle?

The missing shapes are a trapezium and a kite, but which one is which?

Here are the shapes labelled with their names. You can use this image to help you find the missing properties and fill in the table.

    Solution

    Rectangle

    • 4 sides
    • 2 pairs of equal sides
    • 2 pairs of parallel sides
    • 2 pairs of equal angles

    Kite

    • 4 sides
    • 2 pairs of equal sides
    • 0 pairs of parallel sides
    • 1 pairs of equal angles

    Parallelogram

    • 4 sides
    • 2 pairs of equal sides
    • 2 pairs of parallel sides
    • 2 pairs of equal angles

    Trapezium

    • 4 sides
    • 1 pair of equal sides
    • 1 pair of parallel sides
    • 2 pairs of equal angles
