Transcript Key Ideas: Details in a Text

"Otis! Look, look over there! It says there's a space room. Are those real space suits!?" "The sign says, 'Before entering, enlighten yourself with some facts about the sun'." Let's find out more about the sun by learning about key ideas: details in a text. The key idea, or main idea, is what the text is mostly about. Illustrations are pictures or drawings in a text that help us to understand the key idea. When we read, we use the illustrations and the text together to get more information about the key idea. For example, Pearl and Otis first see this illustration of the sun. Without reading the text, let's look at the picture and predict or guess what the text is about. Here we see the sun and a thermometer, which is used to measure the temperature, or how hot or cold something is. Since it goes all the way to the top, we can guess the text will be about the sun and say that it's hot. Now, let's read the text. It says, 'The sun is very hot. It is about five thousand five hundred degrees celsius at the surface.' The illustration told us the text was about the sun being hot and the text gave us more details by telling us the temperature. Next, Otis and Pearl find more information about the sun. Before we look at the illustration, let's see what the text tells us. Then, we will predict what the picture will be! It says, 'The sun is a star.' What do you think the illustration will show? One guess or prediction could be that we will see the sun in outer space. Let's see if that's right! Here we see the sun in outer space. What else do you see? There are many other stars near the sun! The illustration gave us more details about the sun! Otis and Pearl have one last picture with some information about the sun next to it. Before we read this information, let's look at the illustration and predict what the text will be about. What do you see? We see the sun shining on a flower and the flower looks happy. What do you think the text will be about? One prediction could be that flowers like the sun since this one is smiling. Let's see if that's right! The text says, 'Flowers need the sun to grow.' The illustration showed us that flowers like the sun and the text gave us more details by telling us that flowers need the sun to grow. Otis and Pearl are ready for the space room! Whilst they put their spacesuits on, let's review. Remember, the key idea, or main idea, is what the text is mostly about. Illustrations are pictures or drawings in a text that help us to understand the key idea. When we read, we use the illustrations and the text together to get more information about the key idea.
